About Your Instructor
Tanya Porter
Tanya’s drumming journey began in 1986 at the Ontario College of Percussion, where she studied under Rod Fogerty and Paul Robson, mastering jazz, blues, salsa, rock, and funk. She played reggae with Fight Them Back in 1990 and funk with Primal Zoo before joining The Subtonic Monks in 1992, touring and recording with them for a decade. As a freelance percussionist, Tanya has recorded with numerous artists and contributed to soundtracks for CBC and YTV. She has studied Afro-Cuban and West African drumming with renowned teachers and has performed with various ensembles, including Mr. Something Something and The Spirit Drummers. Tanya was also a member of Bolokelen and Ainike and is a founding member of The River Pilots.
